Japanese Society and Culture
Ethics Statement
Authors must follow ethical guidelines stated below.
Submission Declaration
When authors submit an article to the Japanese Society and Culture (JSC), it is implied that:
- The work described has not been published previously except in the form of a preprint, an abstract, a published lecture, an academic thesis, or a registered report.
- The article is not under consideration for publication elsewhere.
- The article's publication is approved by all authors and tacitly or explicitly by the responsible authorities where the work was carried out.
- If accepted, the article will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, including electronically, without the written consent of the copyright-holder.
To verify compliance with our journal publishing policies, we may check your manuscript with our screening tools.
Secondary Publication
Japanese Society and Culture (JSC) is published with the aim of contributing to the development of academia by disseminating information about Japan in English to researchers who cannot access information about Japan because they are not familiar with the Japanese language. For this reason, JSC has decided to accept English translations of Japanese articles published in other journals as secondary publications. For more information on secondary publications, please refer to the following guidance in Japanese:
Secondary Publication Guidance (Japanese)
Authorship
All authors should have made substantial contributions to all of the following:
- The conception and design of the study, or acquisition, analysis, and interpretation of data.
- Drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content.
- Final approval of the version to be submitted.
Authors should appoint a corresponding author to communicate with the journal during the editorial process. All authors should agree to be accountable for all aspects of the work to ensure that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.
Changes to Authorship
The editors of JSC generally will not consider changes to authorship once a manuscript has been submitted. It is important that authors carefully consider the authorship list and the order of authors, and provide a definitive author list at the time of original submission. If an author requests a change in the author's name, the Editorial Board will consider the request and respond to it on a case-by-case basis.
Studies Involving Humans and/or Animals
For studies involving humans or animals and case reports/case series, the following information must be disclosed: the name and approval number/ID of the approving ethical committee/review board. If the study is exempt from liability, this must be stated in detail and the reasons provided. It must also be assured that the study was conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki, as revised in 2013.
Declaration of Interests
All authors must disclose any financial and personal relationships with other people or organizations that could inappropriately influence or bias their work. Examples of potential competing interests include: employment, consultancies, stock ownership, honoraria, paid expert testimony, patent applications or registrations, grants, or any other funding.
Funding Sources
Authors must disclose any funding sources that provided financial support for the conduct of the research and/or preparation of the article. The role of sponsors, if any, should be declared in relation to the study design, data collection, analysis, interpretation, writing of the report, and decision to submit the article for publication.
Declaration of Generative AI in Scientific Writing
Authors must declare the use of generative AI in scientific writing upon submission of the paper. Generative AI and AI-assisted technologies should not be used in analyzing and drawing insights from data as part of the research process, and they should only be used in the writing process to improve the readability and language of the manuscript. The use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in scientific writing must be declared by adding a statement that appears in relevant and appropriate text within the manuscript.
Plagiarism
All submitted manuscripts are screened using a plagiarism checking tool by JSC editors, and if potential plagiarism is detected, a discussion will be held between the editorial board and the author.
Malpractice
If malpractice (plagiarism, data fabrication and falsification, duplicate submission/publication, salami slicing, improper authorship, conflicts of interest, and citation manipulation) is suspected, the JSC will examine the veracity. If any malpractice is discovered, the JSC will take action against the misconduct, which may include rejection, retraction, correction/erratum, and expressions of concern.
Preprints
Authors may share preprints. Sharing preprints, such as on a preprint server, will not count as prior publication.
